With forming, the tap rolls the material, producing a rabbit ear-like shape that includes a gap rather than a flat surface. And while it can be used for most industries, the food, medical, and aerospace sectors are exceptions.” “However, there are some limitations, like it does require more spindle power. “It's also a stronger thread,” said Haid. It also tends to be much more accurate, producing the correct tolerances. With no chip production, this forming tends to offer a higher level of safety and productivity. “Chip evacuation can be a big challenge when threading, especially in deep holes, so not having chips is a strength of this method.” “One of the biggest differences is that forming taps do not create chips,” said Kyle Matsumoto, product engineer, OSG USA, St. Instead of cutting the threads, forming taps displace material flowing into the gaps of the teeth as opposed to cutting them.”Īnd while the cutting methods tend to be the most popular, thread forming does offer some significant advantages, depending on the application. “Most people think that you have to use a cutting tap in a hole. “It's very hard to entertain the idea of switching to thread forming if you’re not familiar with it or haven't been introduced to it in the past,” said Matthew Haid, application specialist, Dormer Pramet, Elgin, Ill. The three common methods for threading internal holes are tapping, milling, and forming. One misstep and the entire part could be scrapped, and no one wants this. This is why it is imperative to thread correctly. This part of the process takes place late in the game, often after quite a bit of work has been done to bring the component to near completion. Emuge Corp.Ĭreating threads is a common practice in many machine shops. With forming, you have to control two dimensions simultaneously, which are the minor diameter and the pitch diameter.

Pluto was demoted from its planetary status in 2006 when a body of scientists decided a formalized definition for the term “planet.”Īccording to the International Astronomical Union's definition, a planet is “a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.” Because Pluto is part of the Kuiper Belt, and therefore has not met the third criterion, it is no longer considered a planet. However, it is now considered to be one of the largest known members of the Kuiper Belt - a collection of icy bodies on the outer fringes of the solar system. Doubtful. If things slow down and they actually show up and you the victim and/or reporting party aren’t present there is no crime. You guessed correctly if you sensed that anything other than a felony in progress is coded green. Dispatch codes the calls as red/yellow/green and the MCT (mobile computer terminal) in the police cars just keep pushing the highest priority calls. On an 8 hour shift police are pretty much just going from one felony to the next. If you call 911 and report a crime in progress it will only get an immediate response if it is a felony. It’s how law enforcement agencies track and report crime statistics. If you truly believe crime is down and at historic lows you might want to research “CompStat”. I love everyone on every side of this issue, but the first rule of investigation is: “Consider The Source”. Update: San Francisco records show Nima Momeni was booked into jail at 9:19 a.m. We will update or follow this article as soon as possible. The arrest in the Lee case is a breaking story. Of note, police sources say that a series of homeless people had previously been pepper-sprayed in the Marina District prior to this instance. But the lawyer for his alleged attacker claims that the former fire commissioner first pepper-sprayed the homeless man accused of beating him - which certainly would color this incident. Carmignani, for instance, was brutally struck in the head with a metal rod and hospitalized. It also omits potentially mitigating details of the individual events. This manner of coverage, however, does not capture the actual lived experience of the vast majority of San Franciscans. Lee’s death, however, was packaged in the media and on social media into a highlight reel of recent San Francisco misfortunes and crimes: large groups of young people brawling at Stonestown the abrupt closure of the mid-market Whole Foods, leaving San Franciscans just eight other Whole Foods within city limits the severe beating of former fire commissioner Don Carmignani in the Marina District, allegedly by belligerent homeless people - it all adds up to a feeling of a city coming undone. Data from the California Department of Justice and the Census Bureau. Devi’s desires to be a “normal” American girl with a boyfriend are impeded by her mother’s expectations for her to be an accomplished, obedient daughter. Like many Indian American second-generation women, Devi struggles to navigate her bicultural existence, which my co-contributor Himanee Gupta-Carlson deftly unpacks. This Hinduism, which largely defines American Hinduism today, promotes Islamophobia, casteism, and patriarchy, which is most evident in the policing of Devi, Kamala, and Nalini, who all struggle to live up to the ideals of being a good, middle-class Hindu women in the diaspora. More precisely, the Hinduism represented in the series does not capture the diversity that encompasses the religion, but privileges the values and aspirations of upper caste, middle class Hindus in the United States who embody the model minority. Like most Americans post 9/11, he assumes she is Muslim because of her skin, what Khyati Joshi calls the racialization of religion, when “an individual’s race creates a presumption as to her religious identity.”Īlthough the series does briefly point out that India is a country of many religions, ultimately to be Indian in Never Have I Ever is to be Hindu. Yes, Ira gets credit for knowing Ramadan is a holiday requiring fasting, but many religions require fasting. After posing with a white girl enamored by her half-sari, the exacerbated Devi responds to the cashier’s query about wanting donuts with her drink order: “Yeah, Ira, I do, but I’m fasting today.” Ira responds, “Oh, is it Ramadan?” This insider joke for the desi audience portrays a common encounter of being exoticized and misrecognized. In one of the series’ best structured sequences, Kaling alludes to America’s ignorance of South Asian religions. The centering of Hinduism in our introduction to Devi, however, is less about exploring her relationship with faith and more about exhibiting how our collective (mis)understanding of Indian culture in the United States is reduced to Hinduism. In fact, the construction of the scene is reminiscent of prayers known by the Protestant Christian American majority. In a similar manner, Devi’s prayers capture how a Hindu American teen in Southern California might pray. This is best captured by Sanjay Patel’s Sanjay’s Superteam (2015), a Pixar short that features the story of a young Hindu American boy who reimagines Hindu gods as superheroes as a way to approach praying and his faith in a manner that speaks to him. In the past 10 years, however, as South Asian Americans break through Hollywood’s bamboo ceiling, representation of Hinduism has changed. Did I know what I was in a past life? Did I worship Kalimaa as depicted in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? Why do you worship so many gods? Hollywood’s representation of Hinduism prompted these questions, which, as a kid who knew little about the religion and desperate to be “normal,” only exacerbated my feelings of not belonging. Growing up in the 90s in the Bible Belt, I endured questions from my Christian schoolmates about Hinduism. Swapnil Rai, Assistant Professor of Film, Television and Media at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Himanee Gupta-Carlson, Associate Professor of Literature, Communication, and Cultural Studies at SUNY Empire State College and Dr. Rupa Pillai, lecturer of Asian American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania Dr. To explore how Never Have I Ever engages in themes of religion and race in contemporary Asian American life, I curated a roundtable discussion with several colleagues who have expertise in the fields of Asian American studies, religious studies, and film studies: Dr. Beginning with the opening scene of the first episode, the show portrays the rituals of an American Hindu family, and religious beliefs and practices are a central feature of the plot and the characters. (See, for example, my discussion of Marie Kondo last year.) In contrast, Never Have I Ever doesn’t shy away from portraying religion. When they do, the characters are often Christian, or they deploy problematic “Oriental Monk” tropes. By and large, however, most Hollywood depictions of Asian American families do not engage in religion at all. Over the past half century, the United States has become increasingly multireligious, and the shifting demographics owe largely to Asian Americans, who are the most religiously diverse racial group in America. In particular, I appreciate the show’s attention to an often overlooked dimension of Asian American diversity: religion. Therefore, it should not interfere with casting spells. They’re also attracted to perspiration.įor growers of certain types of vining vegetables, the squash bee ( Peponapis pruinosa) is a welcome sight. Key Characteristics: With more than 500 species and multiple colors, sweat bees can be difficult to identify, although many have a metallic sheen and are relatively small. To minimize the pain of a sweat bee bite, brush the bee off as soon as it stings. Only female sweat bees sting, and when they do sting, they continue to pump venom into their victims until they’re removed. They nest underground in colonies and gather pollen and nectar to feed the colony and themselves. Sweat bees live in all countries, but they tend to like temperate regions the best. Adults range from ¼ to ¾ inches long, with most species at the smaller end of the scale. Some sweat bees feature bands of color, and all are valued for their contribution to pollinating plants. Named because of their attraction to perspiration, the sweat bee ( Halictidae) is a small bee that bears colorful metallic shades of green and blue, although some in this species of more than 500 are brown and black. They drill long tunnels in wood to create nests. Key Characteristics: Approximately ½ inch to just under 1 inch in length, carpenter bees have a black tail end and a yellow upper body. Instead, male carpenter bees exhibit aggressive, dive-bombing behavior to keep predators away from their nests. Both male and female carpenter bees drill tunnels for nests, but only the female bee will sting. In reality, the tunnels can be up to 10 feet long. At first glance, the tunnels they drill might look relatively shallow, only an inch or two deep. Carpenter bees nest in wood, drilling holes and creating tunnels in dead trees, wood fences, decks, and even the wood structural parts used to build homes. While valued for their ability to pollinate plants, which makes them beneficial to home gardeners and growers, carpenter bees also have a shady reputation. The difference, however, is that carpenter bees have a black tail end and a yellow upper body rather than stripes. Sometimes mistaken for bumblebees, carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.) range in size from about ½ inch to nearly an inch long and are black and yellow. RELATED: How to Keep Bees in Your Own Backyard They seek out colorful blooms to pollinate and to collect pollen and nectar. They appear fuzzy and emit a loud buzz that people can hear from a distance. Key Characteristics: Bumblebees have large, round bodies with dark brown or black stripes interspersed with bright yellow or orange coloring. Unlike on honeybees, the stinger on a bumblebee is smooth, so it doesn’t pull off when the bee stings, and the bee can sting multiple times. Only the queen lays eggs, and the other bumblebees collect pollen and nectar from blooms to feed themselves and the queen. Like honeybees, bumblebees choose a queen who rules the colony. Bumblebees are social by nature and live in colonies ranging from 50 to 500 members. Bumblebees are found worldwide and typically build their nests near the ground, in abandoned rodent tunnels, in the foundations of structures, or even in piles of dead limbs. It features a fuzzy rotund body with dark brown or black combined with bright yellow or orange stripes. Larger than honeybees, the bumblebee ( Bombus dahlbomii) ranges in size from about ½ inch to 1 inch in length, although with more than 255 species of bumblebees, some species are notably smaller. This bee carries pollen on its legs, appearing as large yellow or orangish clumps when it’s gathered as much as it can hold. Key Characteristics: Western honeybees are ⅓ inch to ½ inch long, brown and yellow striped, and find brightly colored blossoms most attractive. After the worker bee stings, its barbed stinger remains in the victim, and the bee dies. Only worker bees can sting, but they don’t set out to do so-they only sting to protect the hive. The other females are nonreproductive and become worker bees. The queen bee, chosen at the larval stage and fed a diet of royal jelly and nectar, is the only female that lays eggs. The eggs are haplodiploid, meaning they can become either female or male-unfertilized eggs become male drones, while fertilized eggs become female worker bees. These honeybees congregate in colonies that have a single queen bee. The western honeybee encompasses at least 20 subspecies throughout the world, some occurring naturally and others resulting from species blending by beekeepers. Bearing recognizable brown stripes on a mustard yellow body, the western bee is prized not just for honey production but for its ability to pollinate crops, which increases harvests. When most think of honeybees, they’re picturing this fellow, also called the “European Honeybee.” Beekeepers raise the western honeybee ( Apis mellifera) for its honey, bee pollen, and other bee-related products.
